Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Marcell Szabó (piano)
Moderator: Dániel Mona
Sounding paintings? Impossible! After all, we look at pictures and listen to music. But not with Mussorgsky, who transformed the paintings of his painter friend into music. And, as unbelievable as it may seem, with the right musical characters, not only can the person or place depicted in the picture be translated to the piano, but also the style, colour scheme, and size of the painting. From lively little chicks to the grand gates of Kyiv, from elegant people to terrifying figures, this sound exhibition presents many scenes, where the composer even set to music the walk from one painting to another. The work, most commonly known in its orchestral version, will now be presented in its original solo piano form by Mussorgsky’s expert interpreter, pianist Marcell Szabó. Dániel Mona will not only project the images but also reveal the colours, layers, and brushstrokes of these sound paintings.
