The evening features works by three outstanding composers, each embodying the musical ideals of their own era. The program presents a rich musical world, where the pure forms of classicism and the deep emotional expressions of romanticism find their place. The personal stories of the composers and the artistic aspirations of the era are both reflected in the works, through which the audience can experience the timeless charm of music. Robert Schumann completed the first version of his only cello concerto on the day of his conducting debut in Düsseldorf in 1850. The work, in three movements without a pause, is dominated less by virtuosity than by emotional expression. In 1795, when Ludwig van Beethoven composed his first piano concerto, he was active and developing his artistic talent in the vibrant center of Viennese musical life. Classicism was still the dominant trend, but Beethoven’s music already showed the first signs of innovative aspirations and romantic passion. Johannes Brahms’ Second Symphony was composed in the summer of 1877, on the picturesque shores of Lake Wörth in Carinthia. Romantic music had by then developed a mature and emotionally rich style, which Brahms further developed with inspiration from nature.
